How to think about and use Place Names

Crucial to your success using Mileage Pie is understanding the proper use of place names and addresses. As with everything. your judgement here is important, and your judgement will improve over time.

When you enter some place or some other place, we require enough information to identify a unique place. Providing enough information, you could say, is a Best Practice for using Mileage Pie

Sometimes a place name is enough information to identify a unique place. Yankee Stadium. Fenway Park.

Sometimes, we do need a little bit more information, like for Walmart, for instance. If you do not include a city and a state, MP will return the Walmart that is closest to your home address. Maybe that works. Maybe it doesn’t. Suffice to say, there are a lot of Walmarts. There are a lot of Home Depots. Best practice for most places will be to include the city and state. And if there are multiple locations in a given city, a zip code will really be your best option.

Fair to say that if your place doesn’t have a name, then you will need to provide a street address including city and state.

For longer trips – trips exceeding some 10 – 20 miles – frequently a city and state, alone, will provide enough information to return a reasonable accurate mileage figure. You can also use a zip code. We support the use of 5-digit zip codes only for this purpose.

Use your best judgement.

As noted elsewhere, if you are using a Declared Mileage record and you expect that maybe you will switch to a Dynamic Mileage record, try to use a location or an address that will work in a Dynamic Mileage context.
